Foundation-supported cultural research
The Percy Foundation is supporting preparation and publication of a catalogue devoted to the surviving work of Russell FitzGerald (1932–1978), a mid-century American figurative painter whose work combined art, sexuality, history, myth, religion, and metaphysics.
FitzGerald worked in San Francisco, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vancouver. Much of his surviving work ultimately entered the collection of the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at the University of British Columbia.
Rediscovering the work
Art historian Jon Davies organized the 2024 Belkin exhibition That Directionless Light of the Future: Rediscovering Russell FitzGerald. The related publication project draws on FitzGerald’s papers, surviving paintings, and interviews with people who knew him.
