BIENNIAL BOOK AWARD
Warren Johansson Book Award
The Foundation recognizes books that make significant contributions to scholarship relevant to its mission. The 2024 award went to Bonnie Burkhardt for Manufacturing Criminals, 2nd Edition: Wiretapping and Planting Evidence. Hugh Ryan received the 2022 award for The Women’s House of Detention: A Queer History of a Forgotten Prison.
GAY LIBERATION
Charley Shively Prize
Named for the poet, historian, and activist Charley Shively, the prize recognizes contributions to gay liberation. Author and activist Perry Brass received the Foundation’s 2025 prize, following earlier recipients including August Bernadicou and Ryan Conrad.
Support beyond awards
The Foundation’s mission also encompasses support for research, publication, archival work, public lectures, conferences, translation, documentary work, and other projects that expand serious inquiry into neglected or difficult subjects.
