Historian and author Hugh Ryan received the Foundation’s biennial Warren Johansson Book Award for The Women’s House of Detention: A Queer History of a Forgotten Prison.
Ryan’s book reconstructs the history of the Greenwich Village detention facility and the queer women whose lives were shaped by incarceration, social-service intervention, and changing systems of legal and moral regulation.
The Foundation’s award announcement also situates Ryan’s work within grassroots public history, including his earlier research and community-based exhibition work.
